Samsung S22 - Rumours and Leaks

The Samsung Galaxy S22 release is almost 6 months away, and as expected, the rumour mill is active. Some things come as standards, like the choice between a Qualcomm chipset or a Snapdragon chipset and different variants spotting different specs. But others, not so much. Like the rumour that there will be a significant update to the camera setup of the basic Samsung Galaxy S22. As always, these are just rumouring, and nothing is cast in stone yet, but it gives us a pretty good idea on whether you should hold on to your current phone and buy the Samsung Galaxy S22 when it comes out. Here what we know so far.

Release date

Keeping with Samsung tradition, it is safe to say that this smartphone will likely come out within the first quarter of 2022. In previous years the dates used to fall between the months of February and March, but for 2021, the Samsung Galaxy S21 came in January. Little is known about the exact date as of yet, but it would definitely be a surprise if Samsung pulls off another January release. As the rumours keep coming in, we will keep you updated on what’s confirmed and what’s not until the release date. That said, there is not much clarity with the pricing just yet. With Apple releasing the iPhone 12 mini at $699, we can expect that Samsung will offer something along these lines to compete favourably. This might mean dropping the price of the entry-level Galaxy S22 significantly or creating a new device just for the sake.

Camera

Arguably the hottest rumour going around at the moment pertains to Samsung’s new set of cameras for the Galaxy S22. While the Galaxy S21 and S21+ scavenge parts from previous devices, the Galaxy S22 is likely to take a new route. The rumour mill is rife with stories that Samsung will build a new camera set up for this smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy S20 And Galaxy S21 series setup comprise dual 12MP wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle cameras. For the Samsung Galaxy S22, Samsung is rumoured that it will make a 50MP primary camera flanked by 12MP telephoto and ultra-wide cameras in a triple camera array. Nothing has been leaked about the final design of the camera module so we can’t share any renders of how the back will look like in the final setup.

Display

Famous tech leaker Mauri QHD suggests that Samsung will also shrink the displays on the Galaxy S22 range. In a complete departure from their phablet size flagships, this rumour seems to follow Apple’s philosophy of single-handed use. While most phones are sized for two-handed use by default, iPhones have always stuck to the uncanny one-handed devices in the smartphone space. This rumour also seems to confirm the fact that Samsung may indeed have a low-priced Galaxy S22 to compete with the iPhone 12 Mini. Furthermore, it is expected that the new displays will use LTPO technology which means that their 120Hz refresh rate screens can adapt to as low as 1Hz to save battery.

Performance

Samsung devices have always debuted with the latest from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon line-up, and the same is true for the Galaxy S22 series. With the recent release of the 4nm Snapdragon 895 chipset, it is expected that the new devices will feature it or something better, especially since that Samsung shall be the company to manufacture this chip. The graphics power is also expected to receive a boost, with rumours flying around that the Galaxy S22 is tipped to get an AMD RDNA 2 architecture-based GPU. This is the same architecture used in the Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles. That’s not to mean that it will get the same level of performance, but you should expect a serious jump in graphical performance. Maybe even stake a claim among gaming phones, with mobile gaming becoming a real frontier for Samsung to Expand into.

What we’d love to see

We can’t help but feel that all these rumours only point to minor and iterative updates to the Galaxy S21 series. It better to go for a refurbished Samsung S20 in Australia. It has been a long time since there was anything significant to look up to in the phone space. With the exception of foldables, we can count the few things that are really outstanding. But if someone is going to spark a new smartphone revolution, then it can only be Samsung. We look forward to a true full-screen phone, no hole punches, no under-screen fingerprint scanners that choose when to work—just a masterfully made all-screen phone. This would mean different ideas for the front camera situation, speakers, and even the ultrasonic fingerprint reader. An all-screen device would also mean better integration with the S-pen, which looks more like an afterthought on the Galaxy S21 series.
